GREAT SUCCESS OF THE CONFERENCE TITLED “NET-ZERO AND CLIMATE-RESILIENT SHIPPING: CAN GREECE LEAD THE RACE?”
The Conference titled “Net-Zero and Climate-Resilient Shipping: Can Greece Lead the Race?” organized by the Goulandris Museum of Natural History, the UNSDSN Global Climate Hub, and the AE4RIA initiative, was held on Friday, May 31, 2024, at the Goulandris Museum of Natural History, under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy.
The aim of the conference was to gather maritime professionals so that all together can contribute to the implementation of innovative solutions and research that could lead to the introduction of more efficient technologies with a low ecological footprint and aid in accelerating the transformation of the Greek shipping sector.
The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Mr. Christos Stylianides, who took part in the event, emphasized the need for safe, affordable low-carbon fuels and highlighted Greece’s commitments to enhancing port infrastructure. Moreover, he mentioned recent commitments of the ministry, such as equipping at least 12 Greek ports with coastal power services by 2030, conducting a study for the gradual renewal of the entire passenger fleet in Greece by 2025, and renewing the fleet with low-emission ships on public interest coastal routes.
The President of the Goulandris Museum of Natural History, Ms. Fali Voyatzaki, noted in her speech the l respect of the Greeks for nature since ancient times, the role of the museum in environmental education, and its current focus on climate change.
Prof. Dr. Phoebe Koundouri, Professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business, Professor at the Department of Technology, Management and Economics, Technical University of Denmark – DTU, chair of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Global Climate Hub and Scientific Director of Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aeiphoria (AE4RIA), highlighted Greece’s ability to lead in promoting sustainable shipping through collaborations. She stressed the importance of leveraging technology and financing for this transition.
The conference panels, presented by specialized speakers, covered themes related to integrating ESG criteria into the Greek business sector, technological innovations for green shipping, dual skills for transitioning to the “Blue Economy,” and Greece’s leading role in green shipping
