Terrestrial Zoology
The Department of Terrestrial Zoology focuses on Insects and Arachnomorphs, Amphibians and Reptiles, Birds and Mammals.
The scientific activities of the Department include field work and laboratory research on Ecology, Zoogeography, Physiology and management of protected areas and fauna species. Information is also being provided to the public and the relevant stakeholders on biodiversity issues. Laboratory research includes trophic and morphometric analysis, study of thermal and reproduction ecology, as well as preventive conservation and management of museum collections.
The activities of the Entomological Department began in 1971. The Entomological Collection consists of approximately 40.000 specimens. About 16.000 specimens have been recorded in a database, 1.250 of them have been digitized. The Collection consists mainly of Lepidoptera, followed by Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera and Hemiptera, mainly from Greece. The number of paratype specimens in the collection is 17.
The Ornithological Department was founded in 1980. About 2000 specimens of mounted birds belong to this collection most of them from Greece. There is also a collection of African birds. About 700 specimens from the Collection have been recorded in a database.
The Herpetological Collection began in 1984 and includes specimens of amphibians and reptiles mainly from Greece. It includes specimens from all reptile groups: crocodiles, turtles, lizards and snakes from all over the world.
The Mammalogical Collection consists of about 200 specimens, mainly from Greece and Africa. These specimens belong to 86 described species of 35 families. Most of them belong to the order Carnivora, followed by Artiodactyla, and Rodentia. There are also specimens of Insectivora, Marsupialia, Monotremata and Lagomorpha.

RESUME
Maria Dimaki is a doctor of Biological Sciences from the University of Athens. Her main scientific interests are herpetology and ornithology. She studied biology at the University of Patras and has been working at the Goulandris Natural History Museum in Athens since 1996. She is in charge of the Department of Terrestrial Zoology, and Museum’s Collections Manager.
She has participated in many research projects on biodiversity, fauna and protected areas management. Her scientific publications mainly refer to zoology, ecology and zoogeography of reptiles and birds of Greece. Also she has a number of publications on museum collections (entomological and mammal collections).
She has collaborated with the University of Athens, the Department of Public Health of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens, the Aegean Museum of Natural History (Samos island), the “Nicholaos Demetriou” Cultural Foundation, the University of Extremadura (Spain), the University of Göteborg (Sweden), etc. She was a member of the CITES Scientific Committee of the Ministry of the Environment (2008-2013). She is a founding member and member of the Board of the Hellenic Herpetological Society, as well as a member of the Hellenic Zoological Society and the Hellenic Entomological Society. She has received scholarships from the State Scholarship Foundation, the European Commission’s Training and Mobility of Researchers Greece. Also she has a number of publications on museum collections (entomological and mammal collections). She has collaborated with the University of Athens, the Department of Public Health of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens, the Aegean Museum of Natural History (Samos island), the “Nicholaos Demetriou” Cultural Foundation, the University of Extremadura (Spain), the University of Göteborg (Sweden), etc. She was a member of the CITES Scientific Committee of the Ministry of the Environment (2008-2013).
