The last issue of the British Magazine “Gardens Illustrated” featured an extended article the Sparoza Estate, located in Paiana and bequeathed in 1983 to the Goulandris Natural History Museum!

The history of the Sparoza Estate

The “Sparosa” Estate in Paiania owned by the British Town Planner Jacqueline Tyrwhitt, Professor of Town Planning at Harvard University, was left to the Goulandris Museum of Natural History in 1983.

Exploiting her knowledge as an urban planner and amateur botanist, she chose this 17.5-acre estate on the eastern side of Ymittos. Her intention was to create a Mediterranean garden with endemic plants where the visitor would fellas if they were in a natural environment.

She built a small stone house with big glass windows, completely harmonized with the environment, and settled permanently.

After her death the estate was bequethed to the Goulandris Natural History Museum due to her acquaintance with of Angelos and Niki Goulandris and her appreciation of their work.

In 1991, Angelos and Niki Goulandris, chose Sally Razelou, a lover of gardening, as a tenant at the Sparoza Estate, where she lived until she passed away in March 2021.

Sally Razelou, together with a few other enthusiastic gardeners, created “The Mediterranean Garden Society”, which is nowadays Internationally known with from places all over the globe, such as Australia and California. The headquarters remain at the Sparoza Estate.

Many young botanists have spent time at the Estate for their internship or for conducting research on Mediterranean plants in a model site of ecological horticulture.
