The Museum’s Library was set up in the 1970’s by Professor Werner Greuter, then Director of the Goulandris Natural History Museum. The Library contains 45.000 volumes of scientific journals on the natural sciences that are constantly being enriched, as well as 15.500 catalogued books, among which are some rare historic publications concerning the philosophy and the historical evolution of those sciences. It also has most Greek publications-recent and older-on reptiles, birds and mammals.
The Library has received important donations in books by the Museum’s founders Angelos and Niki Goulandris, by C. Goulimis, by the naturalist G.P. Moazzo, by the geologists St. Katrakis and M. Nikolaou, by Fr. Sellman and others.
The scientific publication ‘Annales Musei Goulandris’ which was first published in 1973, is being exchanged with 1280 scientific publications by Research Centres, Libraries and Universities worldwide.
The Library supports the Museum’s scientific departments, which are the departments of Botany, Geology, Palaeontology, Herpetology, Ornithology, Entomology, Marine Biology, Bioanalytical and Soil Technology & Biotechnology. It is also frequented by numerous researchers and scientists.
The Library is housed in a pleasant two-level room, specially designed to serve an important number of visitors. It is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 2pm.
