{"id":50910,"date":"2024-03-03T19:23:45","date_gmt":"2024-03-03T17:23:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gnhm.gr\/cosmonaut-on-earth-the-new-temporary-exhibition-at-the-gnhm-presenting-art-works-of-aggelos-goulandris\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T13:20:23","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T10:20:23","slug":"cosmonaut-on-earth-the-new-temporary-exhibition-at-the-gnhm-presenting-art-works-of-aggelos-goulandris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gnhm.gr\/en\/announcements\/cosmonaut-on-earth-the-new-temporary-exhibition-at-the-gnhm-presenting-art-works-of-aggelos-goulandris\/","title":{"rendered":"COSMONAUT ON EARTH: THE  TEMPORARY EXHIBITION AT THE GNHM PRESENTING ART WORKS OF AGGELOS GOULANDRIS RUNS THROUGH MARCH 10, 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Angelos Goulandris: Cosmonaut on Earth<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">The unknown side of a great visionary<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cosmonaut on Earth&#8221; is the title of the exhibition presented at the Goulandris Natural History Museum, featuring works by its founder, Angelos Goulandris.<strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\"> The retrospective show runs through to March 10, 2024.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A genuine visionary, ecology pioneer Angelos Goulandris is renowned for his immense contribution to the cultural landscape of Greece through the founding of the eponymous Natural History Museum. <strong><span style=\"color: #544242;\">Twenty-seven years after his death, a little known but paramount aspect of the man is being presented for the first time: that of the artist.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Parallel to his unwavering devotion to promoting the museum and its scope, and alongside his internationally renowned botanical painter wife Niki, Goulandris systematically created his own works. <strong><span style=\"color: #544242;\">He perceived his art as both a form of philosophical reflection and an alternative code of communication.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Deeply cosmopolitan, A. Goulandris engaged with some of the most prominent creative minds of his time. These interactions inevitably influenced his work, which seems to narrate a double story:<strong><span style=\"color: #544242;\"> that of the (then) present and another of a future that he saw first and foremost through the lens of his imagination.<\/span> <\/strong>His compositions did not pursue conventional beauty, but rather aimed to decode the geometry of the universe. He himself considered art to be the only source of creation alongside nature. <strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">&#8220;Art is the domain of freedom, governed by its own laws that remain unknown to us. This is the space I am trying to navigate,&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><span style=\"color: #544242;\">he characteristically said of his artistic approach.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The collective curatorial belongs to <strong><span style=\"color: #544242;\">Lampis Theodoropoulos,<\/span><\/strong> artistic director of GNHM, art historian <strong><span style=\"color: #544242;\">Giorgos Mylonas<\/span><\/strong> and <strong>Maria Xanthakou.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #544242;\">&#8220;Art is the oblique look at life and Angelos\u00a0Goulandris felt that he kept within it the innocent gaze of a child, unaffected by the turning of time&#8221;<\/span><\/strong> notes curator G. Mylonas. The artist had a wide expressive range, in terms of disciplines, materials, and means. He created sketches on small pieces of paper with the same ease as he produced large-scale bronze sculptures. <strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">The 117 works presented in the exhibition &#8211; paintings, drawings, sculptures and stained glass &#8211; have been carefully selected from a collection of around 2200 that Goulandris created in his lifetime.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Creative expression was a way of life for Angelos Goulandris&#8221; <strong><span style=\"color: #544242;\">says Fali Voyatzaki, current president of the Goulandris Natural History Museum and a close associate of the pioneering man for 30 years.<\/span> <\/strong>&#8220;He believed that imagination is the antenna that connects us to the other side and the ultimate weapon we posses. Through his works, much like a new cosmonaut, he leads us to a different perspective of the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition is accompanied by a parallel program of activities for people of all age groups, while a collector&#8217;s catalog and a series of art objects, inspired by A. Goulandris works, compliments the show. <strong><span style=\"color: #544242;\">It is worth mentioning that all exhibited art is for sale, with proceeds going towards the support of the Museum\u2019s oeuvre.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">About Angelos Goulandris<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hailing from an old seafaring family of Andros, Angelos Goulandris was born in Constantinople in 1920. His family settled in Athens in 1935, always maintaining close ties with Paris. Together with his wife Niki he founded the Museum in 1964, to which he dedicated himself until his death in 1996. He began systematically painting in the 1960s, in search of a new code of values to restore natural balance and harmony.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">About the Goulandris Natural History Museum:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Goulandris Natural History Museum is dedicated to the study, conservation, and protection of Greece\u2019s natural resources and the promotion of environmental awareness.
