Among the mammals’ collection of the Museum there are monotremes and marsupials of Australia such as the duck-billed platypus and the spiny ant-eater, the kangaroo and the koala.
The placental mammals are distributed in various biotopes: The African savanna with a family of lions, cheetahs, and a baboon, the tropical forest of S.E. Asia with the tiger and the Malaysian bear, the cold coniferous forest of Central Asia with the rare snow leopard and the black Himalayan bear, the tropical Amazonian forest with the jaguar, and the cold coniferous forest of N. America with the musk ox.
A large part of the mammals’ collection consists of characteristic African species. The giraffe, the warthog, the zebra, the African buffalo, the rare white rhino, together with two species of antelope the kudu and the impala are some specimens of herbivore mammals from the African savanna. From the carnivores, visitors can see from up close lions, cheetahs and leopards.
A special display presents the Mediterranean monk seal, a rare mammal threatened of extinction more than any other in Europe.
