Peonies of Greece

MILITOS publications, in collaboration with the Goulandris Museum of Natural History, present the reissue of the great book Peonies in Greece, first published in 1984. Since then the study of the peony species has been enriched with many new elements, which led to the new, revised edition, which coincided with the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Goulandris Museum.

The natural peonies in the hills and mountains of Greece are among the most beautiful and impressive plants, with large white, violet or red flowers, which are distinguished for their beautiful foliage. Forty years ago their spread in Greece was very little known and even less had their classification and nomenclature been studied.

Extensive botanical research and detailed study over the last forty years have resulted in the current understandable, well-documented and abundantly illustrated reference to the genus Paeonia, as represented in Greece. The monograph is also an important contribution to the knowledge of the Mediterranean peonies as a whole.

Beginning with their medicinal fame and mythology as recorded by the ancient Greeks, it traces the history of peony research from ancient herbalists to modern botanical literature and contains illustrations from rare early works as well as current work done specifically for plant this. The publication refers in detail to all the species and subspecies of Paeonia that are found in the Greek islands and the Greek hinterland. In addition, it examines their morphology, geographical distribution and cultivation.
