THE BOTANICAL DEPARTMENT OF THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM PARTICIPATED IN THE COMPILATION OF THE RED LISTS OF THREATENED SPECIES OF PLANTS, ANIMALS, AND FUNGI OF GREECE
Dr Dionysios Mermigkas, Head of the Botanical Department of the Goulanfris Natural History Museum Museum, participated in the Project “Compilation of Red Lists of Threatened Species of Plants, Animals, and Fungi of Greece” by assessing 96 species of plants, 17 of which are endemic to Greece.
The project “Compilation of Red Lists of Threatened Species of Plants, Animals, and Fungi of Greece”, a collaboration of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency” (N.E.C.C.A), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Hellenic Botanical Society, and the Hellenic Zoological Society, was completed by the end of 2023.
Within the framework of the project, over 10,000 species occurring in Greece were assessed and classified into risk categories according to the criteria and specifications of the IUCN. The results are going to be implemented in the creation of a database and the compilation of national red lists, which will be available online.
Red Books or Red Lists comply with international assessment rules to determine whether and to what extent a species is endangered at a national, regional, or global scale. They are valuable tools for planning targeted actions and setting national priorities for the conservation of biodiversity.
Videos featuring selected threatened species are displayed on screens at the Athens Metro stations.
