SUNDAY JUNE 5th, 2022 AT THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
The 2nd Student Drawing Competition “Niki Goulandris” titled “A beautiful butterfly” was a huge success.
On Sunday, June 5th, 2022, a very modest but particularly warm award ceremony was held in the Museum’s garden. The event took place under the strict observance of all health restrictions, for all present parties. Students travelled from all over Greece to receive their awards from the Deputy Minister of Culture Mr. N. Giatromanolakis!
In this year’s competition, many more students than last year engaged, observed, took their pencils, brushes, markers, put a lot of color and gave their best by drawing “A beautiful butterfly”.
This spring, 138 Greek schools sent 2,136 butterflies, that “flew” from Kastoria, Thessaloniki, the Peloponnese, Corfu, Lemnos, Santorini, Crete and many other areas to our computers.
The task of the jury was very difficult, having so many beautiful butterflies. Therefore, in addition to the 12 prizes, 101 commendations were also given to students from 48 schools in the territory, who came very close to being awarded.
The commendations were sent by name to all the students via email to the addresses of their schools.

A few words about butterflies…
Butterflies belong to the Phylum of Arthropods and the Insect Class. Their species number over 17,500 worldwide. Butterflies, along with moths belong to the Lepidoptera Order. Their body is divided by two incisions, into three parts (head, thorax and abdomen). They have two bat-shaped antennae, two pairs of wings and their mouthparts are of the sucking type (proboscis). They are herbivores and the most “popular” of all insects.
They have a very interesting life cycle: they lay eggs, from which the larvae (caterpillars) emerge. These turn into pupas (nymphs) from which the perfect individuals (butterflies) will emerge.
In Greece, 234 species of butterflies have been recorded, 31 of which belong to some risk category of the Red Data Book and are protected by Greek legislation.
The Entomological Department of the Goulandris Natural History Museum began in 1971. Today it includes approximately 38,000 specimens, mainly deriving from Greece. Much of the Entomological Collection (18,000 specimens) consists of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) 10,000 of which are butterflies.
The ancient Greeks called butterflies “souls”, because they believed they were the souls of the dead. In art, they consist the symbol of freedom, transformation, optimism and life itself.
THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STUDENT DRAWING COMPETITION
“NIKI GOULANDRIS”
This is a new institution in our Museum to remind the elders and teach the youth that Niki Goulandris, co-founder of the GNHM was ALSO a botanical painter.
She was engaged in painting the rich Greek flora. She is an internationally recognized botanical painter, having painted almost 800 Greek plants. Her works have been published in various publications.
Honoring her memory, we decided to establish a Panhellenic Drawing competition titled by her name, so to celebrate every year, on the World Environment Day, by awarding the best works of the competition. Last year, on June 5th, 2021, the best Greek Wildflowers were awarded, (this was the first topic of the Niki Goulandris competition). During the award ceremony, the prizes were given by the Minister of Culture Ms. Mendoni. This year we had the pleasure of having Mr. Giatromanolakis, Deputy Minister of Culture, who handed the prizes to the 12 best butterflies artists, as judged by our jury.
World Environment Day
It is celebrated each year, on June 5th and is an encouragement for global awareness and action to protect the environment.
This year the slogan of the World Environment Day was “Only one Earth”, the same that existed 50 years ago, when this day was firstly established back in 1972.
