THE 2024 CHARM OF THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
In acknowledging the importance of the bees in the conservation of Biodiversity, the Goulandris Natural History Museum has chosen MELISSA (bee) by POLINA ELLIS as its 2024 Lucky Charm.
The Bee, source of life, symbol of health, solidarity and unity was the source of inspiration for POLLINA ELLIS, who created this wonderful piece of jewelry as the 2024 Lucky Charm.
There is much to learn from the magical way in which bees manage to survive, even more so in this era of serious environmental crisis, from which they themselves are threatened. Through their perfectly structured community, they create a multifarious “miracle” and example of symbiosis!
In Ancient Greek mythology, deriving from the Minoan civilization, the Bee was a very important sacred symbol. According to a Cretan myth, it was the nurturer of young Zeus and was associated with fertility and abundance.
The creator’s inspiration was the golden Minoan jewel “Bee of Malia” (1800-1700 BC), a piece of absolute harmony which results from the union and antithetical symmetry of the two bees, conveying the message “strength in unity” which is featured in all her collections.
The dominant concept for the artist’s new collection is to connect bees with the honeycomb, while for the MELISSA 2024 charm she breaks down this composition into two different jewels.
